Silver Lake, with its cozy little residential neighborhoods, is a glowing gem amidst the giant sprawl of Los Angeles. The district, with a population of approximately 44,000, can be found just east of Hollywood, a quick drive from the bustling center of Downtown and Central Los Angeles. The district gets its name from the Department of Water and Power's Silver Lake Reservoir, which was named after Herman Silver, a member of Los Angeles’ first Board of Water commissioners. These reservoirs were established in the early 1900s as part of the city-wide system of water storage and delivery. Today, the reservoir property provides both a focal point and affords quality of life benefits to the community. In addition to the obvious open space, water and greenscape view shed, the Neighborhood Nursery School has been around for over 50 years and serves to help bind the community together. Silver Lake is inhabited by a wide variety of ethnicities and socioeconomic groups, but it is best known as an eclectic gathering of the creative community. Since the 1990s, it has become the center of the alternative rock music scene in Los Angeles. The Sunset Junction Street Fair, a growing annual music event in August, is held in the heart of this area. Silver Lake has plenty of refreshing bars and venues that add a new flavor to this city’s night life.
